Question about Wheel Quality

I have a triple axle pontoon trailer with 5.30-12 LRC tires that are dry rot. Checking some tire stores and looking on-line, I can buy six tires with wheels for less that buying the tires only and having them mounted. I'm a couple blocks from the water and only put on about 15 miles a year so not too concerned about the tire quality (Greenball or Carlyle). I'm wondering about wheel quality. If I buy the tire/rim combo are the new wheels the same as the ones with the original tires? Or should I buy tires and have them mounted on the original rims. -Thanks-

Buy good new tires and have them mount on your old rims.

For trailers with small steel rims I always found it just as cheap to buy new tire/rim combo rather than a tire and paying someone to mount it. Steel wheels are steel wheels for the most part, trailer mfg don't make them they just buy the same common ones that you can buy.

What do you do with the old rim? Keep as spare?

In my area there is a used tire shops that mount tires for 5$ a tire.

I know what you mean. I bought 2 new tires and wheels for my son's boat. The wheels look as good if not the same as the originals.

Even if they're not as strong as the originals they're better than old rusty wheels that are run on many old boat trailers.

Used to Sell them or give them away. Around here it was typically $5 on, $5 off for carry in tires and the time wasted getting it done. For my current trailer with aluminum rims it isn't an option any more.

I would just buy the combo's. Sometimes you run into bead seating issues with old wheels. Keep one or two of the old ones around for spares.

+1 on buying a new combo. It is actually a little cheaper at my local tire place to buy the tire/wheel combo than it is to have them put a new tire on an old wheel. They save labor costs, they can have their guys do a batch during a quiet time. I just keep the wheel around until the neighborhood spring cleanup week, a metal recycler will snag the wheel off the curb nearly the instant I put it out.
