I have noticed that you seem very knowledgeable about the omc stern drives and have commented about the "big rubber boot" on the transom. I assume you are talking about the transom seal boot that I have on my 77 omc stern drive. Dooes the presence of this automatically mean that it is a stringer? There are no marks on my outdrive and I've been trying to determine what type it is. Thanks in advance for your help!
Dan

Re: question for boatist

Danthern
The stringer engine I know went from 1979 to 1985 but I am not sure about before 1979. Yes the big rubber boot around the outdrive to me says Stringer. The motor does not bolt up to the transom like most modern engines. Instead it sits on motor mounts. To trim motor actually raise and lower the front of the motor. If have select trim then a motor raises the front of motor and if have manual trim then trim by turning a screw at the front motor mount of engine. I have had a 1980 since new and done almost all the work on it. They also have a 1/4 circle gear to raise the outdrive for tilt.

Re: question for boatist

Thanks for your help. I did an engine swap on this boat and I actually have the selec-trim AND trim tabs. I also have the 1/4 circle gear so I assume its safe to call it a stringer...?? The outdrive does not mount to the transom like you mentioned, but sits on large wooden blocks bolted to the bilge(via motor mounts, of course). Thanks again for the benefit of your knowledge.
Dan
