I'm trying to replace the raw water pump adapter plate and seals on my cobra drive.

Per OMC manual i removed the 2 bolts, took vice-grips and clamped between the 2 water inlet ports and gave it a pull. No luck.Took my huge Channel Locks and tried it again tapping it with a hammer,it didn't budge.
Have been soaking it in PB blaster ant tried heating it,still won't move.
No way i can see as far as getting a puller on it.

Got any tricks for this Don?

Thanks, G...

Can't help ya there Gary. Last time I was that deep into a Cobra drive was about 10 or 12 years ago.
Maybe if you edit the title name, someone else will see it with some helpful info.

Thanks Don.

You would think it would come off,the only thing holding it is rubber seals..:/

Gary,in this case the manual is a fairy tale. The vise-grip deal never works.Usually I end up pulling the u-joint assembly out and drive the adapter plate out from the inside.BIG hammer.

You'll probably find the shaft worn where the seal rides. It was at one time a replacable stub, but now you need to replace the whole shaft.($265).You can have a machine shop spray weld it,or get Redi-Sleeves alot cheaper.

again Gary ..... Do you need to change that adapter plate? The seal can be replaced w/out pulling it,and the adapters get SO frozen in.I'd guess leakage around them is seldom.

The adapter plate is corroded up and pitted.Other than that if i could get a new seal around the shaft i may get by doing only that. The seal is recessed in there so how do you get it out? If i get a spanner wrench and remove the drive shaft and upper gear and carrier bearing can it be pushed out from there?
just the shaft seal sounds so much better..
Thanks DHP....

The seal is pressed in from the oil side of the adapter. But I am confused by your reference to a spanner wrench.

This is a Cobra ?

Have you pulled the drive and looked at the u-joint shaft ?

Yes,Cobra.Do i have to take the top gear loose to pull the driveshaft out? I know you take the 4 bolts loose on the housing around the shaft.
How easy is it to pull the driveshaft and top gear out?

Thanks for your help DHP..

Here's a drawing:

Once you have the 4 bolts out of no. 36, it should just pull out. Do not try to remove the nut on the shaft without the proper tool. It is under 200 lbs of pressure and lock tight as well. All you will do is ruin it.

Thankyou Cobra, I just wasn't sure if it would slide out with the top gear on the drive shaft..(if that makes sence)..
I didn't expect all of this just to change pump adapter plate..:%
