Hello. I have a '74 85hp Evinrude, model 85493. Just before we bought it the previous owner installed a new power pack and stator and verified that the coils were good. At first it ran great(for a day), then the next day we lost spark to cylinders 1 and 3 with only intermittent spark on other cylinders. However when we lifted the warmup lever, cylinders 1 & 3 sparked but not 2 & 4. We determined the timer base was giving us problems so we tried adjusting but ended up installing a new one. Now we have spark everwhere(sometimes intermittent), but weak spark. The spark was strong before we installed the timer base. The motor starts, runs roughly, and warmup lever must always be up, otherwise dies. Could timing or power pack be bad? Are there other adjustments should be made? Thanks, np.

Check the stator for output. It gives the primary voltage for spark.

TMD

I'll check it out. I just thought it was weird that it had strong spark just before we put the new timer base in. Thanks for the help, np.

Supafly-

How did you verify the previous owner installed a new stator? If you are confident it is new it most likely is okay. Do you have a manual for this motor? Get one from Ken Cook(online) if not so that you have specs for testing electrical componets. All testing is easy to do with a multimeter and the manual and you can eliminate many variables.

Could be as simple as bad wires or loose connections when testing. Connect a wire with an alligator clip to the spark plug and then clip to a good ground to be sure you are getting a spark at plug.

New powerpacks can be ruined in one trip if you have wiring problems allowing too much voltage to power pack. Methodically test all your electrical systems for resistance , continuity etc and you will find the problem.

Good Luck

we do have a manual and have done some tests with a multimeter...but we will keep trying. The stator was replaced, whether the new one is good or not i'm not sure yet, we'll check it out. Thanks again, np.

I have installed new stators for Johnson's and they have been bad right from the factory. Never take being NEW as a sign that it works for sure. By doing that you could be making alot more work for yourself.

TMD
