I just bought a 1997 24" Harris with a Volvo Penta 130 I/O and it has not run right since I bought it. A starter, fuel pump and water pump later, I think I have worked out most of the mechanical issues. My question is it will not rev beyond 3000 RPM's and is laboring at WOT. It could either be fuel, carb our some other mechanical issue or I am wondering if it may just have too much prop on it. I am heading up on Sunday to pull the prop to see what size and pitch is on it. My question is: does any one out there have this similar setup and if so, what RPM's are you pulling at WOTand what top speed? Should this boat actually get up on the water?

Re: Question for I/O Owners

I had a24 ft 1987 Harris Flote-Bote years ago that originally had a ford 2.3 motor and OMC outdrive. It would rev fairly quickly up to about 5300 rpm and hit about 28mph. When it started giving me trouble and parts became unavailable, I swapped it out for a 3.0 130hp chevy motor and mercruiser outdrive. It did not rev as quick and the rpm,s went down to about 4500. It also would only go about 24-25 mph. My wife hated the boat and it hated her so it was cheaper to sell the boat. I could ride around on it all summer with the dog and it would run great. Let her get on and a storm would come up and it would start running funny or knocking.

Re: Question for I/O Owners

Anthony,
I have a 24' JC Tritoon powered by a M/C 470 (170 HP). Although the manuel say WOT is around 4500 RPM, I have never had it above about 3000 RPM and at 3000 the boat runs about 28 mph, plenty fast enough for me. I changed the prop 2 years ago to a 15 inch prop with 13 degree pitch. The prop change did not affect the rpm or the speed but it stands the boat up and out of the water. At about 2200 rpm I can look over the back of the boat and see the toon drain plugs.

Just my $0.02 worth.

I am looking into a Harris 28, like want to just go buy it this sunday for the price its at.
I guess I didnt really look at what your location is but I have talked to many marinas around Michigan and they have plenty of parts for the 2.3l ford omc cobra. why are they so hard to find elsewhere?

I don't think you nave a prop issue yet. That engine should max out around 4500 RPM at WOT, sorry I don't have the exact figure. At 200 rpm per pitch, you'd have to drop 7-8 inches of pitch.

I would start with a full tune up.

And check the tubes for marine growth. That causes gobs of drag and eats horsepower.
