Hi Joe- I have a 1973 Evinrude 65 hp (on the original Chrystler bowrider with a push button switch on the controls).

Over the past few years, the engine would bog down after the initial few minutes of use, and I would need to continure to shift in neutral and rev-it-up, then put it back in gear - where it would only go a few miles per hour. After a few minutes, it seemed to clear up and did not happen the rest of the day.

The problem progressed such that now (after an engine tune-up) it runs great in neutral but it will not go above 5 mph in gear? Any thoughts?

Thank you,
Mike

Re: Question for Joe Reeves

Mike.... The 1973 models did not incorporate a electric push button shift. What is the model number of your engine?

If you have compression and spark on all cylinders, the problem would be either a sticking timer base (spark advance) under the flywheel, or fouled, gummed, clogged carburetors.

It could also be disconnected linkages at the engine but that's unlikely unless someone forgot to connect them after the tune up job.

Re: Question for Joe Reeves

Joe - Thank you - You are right. It is a 1972 Triumph J08803... I will look into your suggestions.

By the way if I could ask for a second opinion on my other boat, your suggestions would be greatly appreciated - please reference posting on 9/27 for Johnson 115 hp stalls when cools.

Thank You Again,
Mike
