P.V.,

Thanks for your response in my post about my OMC Cobra that the shop left low on gearcase oil. You answered some of the key questions I had (like variability as to the time it might take for the damage to occur).

You mentioned that "the rear support bearing for the input shaft, located at the aft of the upper housing, will be "blued" from lack of oil!!!" What about the gears themselves? One of the shops main claims is that because the gears themselves weren't 'blackened' the damage couldn't have been due to the low level of gear oil they left in the drive.

I saw the gears. They were torn up but they weren't 'blackened'. However they could have been 'blued' from heat damage which I wouldn't have necessarily noticed since I was looking for 'black' based on their terminology. I honestly don't know if they were 'blued' or not and the old drive has since been sent to the rebuilder.

Is it posible in a case like this that something else might go first leaving the gears damaged but not 'blued'? If so, that part of his argument becomes moot regardless of whether the gears were 'blued' or not.

And would you mind sharing a brief summary of your experinece with boat repair in general and especially OMC?

My one positive is that the shop owner is still open to 'expert' input about the issue and it seems clear to me based on some of your posts that you have quite a bit. If I can pass that on to the owner it might help.

Thanks for your help. I'm learning alot from this board, just wish I had found it before all of this had happened!

p.s. tired to pm you with these questions but apparently that function is no longer working on this board.
