Question for PC builders out there

I am embarking on a project to build a DVR based on an Ubuntu Linux distribution using MythTV.

I want to get started dabbling, more in a proof of concept approach and then to stabilize it and finally move it into a true DVR device with 3+ tuners, remote control , and move it into the living room.

My question has to do with an existing PC that I have and whether I could reuse that case for a new MOBO.

The mobos I have been looking at would need to be ATX style. The PC i have is an HP Pavillion 8240, circa 1997. Was ATX the standard back then or is that more recent. Was the mobo form factor more proprietary when this was built??

I eventually want to move into an HTPC case, but I want my initial build to be as low cost as possible. Reuse of this case could last me a few months as I acquire parts.

thanks for any help..

Most likely proprietary crap. Yes, ATX was around, but especially in the late 90s, nearly all name brand PCs were highly proprietary so you couldn't upgrade.

^^^ bingo!

Check these out. They're ATX, but made to look like they belong in your entertainment center. Good luck with your project and let us know how you like it when you're done.

Re: Question for PC builders out there

I have found cases I would like to use. I just wanted to wait until I new exactly how it would be configured before committing to a fancy case.

I will probably buy a cheaper mid-tower case for the "lab" and when it is ready move it to an htpc case.

This is not my first foray into this space.. My current machine, which is the family machine, is running beyondTv software with an hdtv tuner.

I am finding that using that machine as a media server is a bad idea due the amount of other things it does. I have switched strategies to having a dedicated machine located near the tv with multiple ntsc tuners.

I bet if you go to a local PC repair shop and ask around they'll sell you a used ATX case that you can test with. Don't be surprised if they just give it to you.
