My wife hates the in dash depth finder on our 89 Tracker Pro175. I hate the cheap...and I mean cheap...fish finder she got me for christmas (shhhh...dont tell her that). I would like to replace both with one reliable unit. I want it to be a good fish finder with good reliable bottom detail...be able to accurately display depth while boat is under power (my boats top speed is 42) as well as when tooling around with the trolling motor. I do not need GPS...speed reading would be nice but not necessary. suggestions and or favorites out there?

Re: question on fish finder/depth finder

There're all kinds of makes and models of fishfinders on the market. Everyone has a favorite and most think what they use is good if not great. What you really need is dependent on where you'll use it, what you'll use it for, and how much you want to $pend. Deep water fishing will require different attributes than shallow water cruising. Suggest that you take a look and evaluate for yourself. Lowrance (they make Eagle too) has a real good informative website where you can even see simulated operation of their fishfinders (other makes are basically similar). Look here in these iBoats forums for others' comments on Garmin, Humminbird, etc. (if you don't already get a bunch of recommendations from those folks). Here are a couple links to objective comparisons of fishfinders that may help you.

Fishfinder Report

Another Fishfinder Report

Have fun looking at all the makes/models. It'll be like being a kid in a toy store at Christmas :) .

My favorite is the Eagle Ultra Classic. it has speed (that matches the GPS speed), shows the bottom well and also gives the surface water temp. Fish show well at all depths. Lowrance makes the same unit under a different model no (Don't know which one)

I also have the Eagle Ultra Classic. It is very simple to use and works well. In addition to "snowshoe's" comments the Eagle Ultra Classic also displays the distance travelled.
