I have an old 65000btu propane freestanding propane furnace in my cabin that I want to upgrade to a thrermostat. I also suspect that the valve is not openning all the way (if that is possible) as it does not seem to put as much heat as it previously did.

I am thinking that it may be easier to upgrade the gas valve and run the wires to a millivolt thermostat.

The thing I am unsure about is how to upgrade (retrofit with new) the thermopile, what valve to use, and how to ensure I don't screw up the existing blower control.

Does anyone have any experience doing this type of thing?? i was not able to find any type of information on the heater itself other than what was on the plate as it is a 70's vintage heater.

Re: Question on millivolt gas valve

you mean to say the heater has no t-stat,,already..??

i guess the main valve can become only 1/2 open..

a new valve will come with a t-couple..

shouldn't affect the blower control as this is a separate issue ..

Re: Question on millivolt gas valve

Its got one of those bulb controls. I don't know what their called, they look like a long copper tube. But this is not working as the heater is either on or off. So in the middle of the night when I wake up sweating, I have to get up and turn it off at the valve. When I wake up freezing a few hours later, I reverse the process.

There is a dial that is supposed to control temp, but it doesn't work. So I am looking to remedy this..

Re: Question on millivolt gas valve

i also have a passive gas heater thru-wall in my shop.. no electric required at all..

has a millivolt gas valve an a 'bulb an dial' t-stat..

the bulb senses the room temp an the dail controls the bulbs sensitivity..

from the dial ,, there's 2 wires that go to the gas valve..

can JUST replace the 'bulb an dail' very easily..

GRAINGERS ...
