I'm overhauling my outboard and bought a new connecting rod to replace one that got chewed up. The new one does not have the cap split from the rest of the rod. Do I just back out the rod bolts and give it a whack with a plastic hammer to break it? Anyone ever do this?

Look at it again !------It will / has to fall apart when you take the cap screw out.

I'll take the rod bolts out and report back. I couldn't see any break lines so I was confused.

Whats the crank journal look like????

Crank journal looks good and mics good. A piece of piston skirt broke off and caused some real havoc... Knocked 2 holes in the case and nicked up a connecting rod on the outside of it. I probably could have reused it it just looks beat up.
