Question on out drive Fin

The shark fin on the bottom of the out drive on my boat I just purchased is missing the bottom few inches.Looks like someone must have hit something and broke or ground it off on the bottom.
I heard their is a stainless plate that can be added and just bolted on?????

Mine was almost entirely gone when I bought my boat. I was going to put one of these on, but the guy at the boat shop warned about using them. He said that if you make the skeg too strong, then when you hit something it'll break where it connects to the drive making it much more difficult to repair. Or, even worse, you might crack the lower unit of the drive.

Not sure how true this is, but hopefully some of the more knowledgable guys will comment on this for you.
