I have a question and would like any and all input. I just bought a 22'boat with a tandem axle trailer. My tow vehicle is a Jimmy with 5.7l and 4x4. My driveway has a very steep aproach, a steep grade of about 25', and then it very suddenly levels out onto a level area. I can install drag wheels like those put on an RV, because it will scrapr drastically. My main concern is can the 2' ball theoretically disconnect from the coupler when the trailer and the truck have such a drastic angle difference going over the top, especially since the trailer is back heavy and tongue lite. I havn't tried this yet as I don't want to send the boat back down the drive to its destruction, Thanks all, Don T

Provided all specs and regulations concerning fitting and use of the hitch is met, it should keep.

If your angle beats this one you should be concerned...

For peace of mind you could fit a chain between hitch frame and the tongue (as short as possible) to make sure the trailer won't run away under any circumstances.

Why don't you get a reciever that has a 4" or 6" rise on it in order to raise the tongue up to clear?

I'd be more worried about the bottom of your hill, than the top.....
You Should balance your boat on the trailer to acheive 90% weight on the trailer,+ 10% on the tongue......
As you can see in UU's photo, a 2" coupler connection IS Pretty Stout.....

That's a picture says a thousand words picture, thanks. There are no adjustments I see on the coupler, so I'll drop it in lock the lever and let you know what happens.

Re: Question on possible trailer disconnction

Installed a pair of steel RV skid wheels on some reinforces L-angles at the back end, put the Jimmy in four wheel low and for @ 2' the tires came off the ground and the skid wheels carried the trailer, Jimmy didn't seem to notice it was pulling anything behind it, cleared the bottom, stopped near the top, looked at the coupler, seemed okay, scary but okay. finished the pull up with no problem, trailer, boat and receiver seem none the worse for the ware, thanks for the input, all came out well.
Don T :) :) :)

Re: Question on possible trailer disconnction

As you can see from the pic...its takes a lot to cause disconnection. My father one time rolled a 24 foot camper while towing with an Explorer...it stayed connected although the trailer (camper) frame was bent. Just use care and good judgement when making connections and ALWAYS use chains.
