What is invloved on replacing the stator? Just install the same exact way as I take out? I guess I should buy a manual before I attempt to replace any type of electrical parts. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Question on replacing stator

I'm certainly not the worlds foremost expert on outboard repair, but I DID just replace my stator yesterday.

My question for you is: Without a manual, how have you determined that you need to replace the stator? Are you having problems with the ignition, or the charging system? Have you checked the other components in the system?

Re: Question on replacing stator

Had a stator problem with my '89 85HP. one of the wires burnt off of it.
I didnt know it but I knew something was wrong cause it was missing pretty bad. It would run though. It would actually get to full RPM's (eventually) and then kinda slow down from there.
It never stranded me.
I guess that even though the wire was burnt from its connection on the coils, it was making enough contact while flapping around in its little space in the epoxy and letting it run.
Either way, it wasnt long for this world.
I actually had another problem with it about a year and a half ago. It was acting kinda squirrelly and I pulled the cowling to have a look. I saw that the whole inside of the cowling was coated with aluminum shavings!
I started it up and saw these shavings flying out from under the flywheel.
I pulled the flywheel and found that 3 of the 4 screws that hold the stator in place had come loose and were backing out of the holes. Then they started rubbing on the inside of the flywheel, grinding a nice 5/16 inch groove inside the flywheel.
I removed all the screws, cleaned out holes with mineral spirits and loc-tited all the screws, tighted them as tight as they would go and started it up. No problem.
