Is there really any great benefit to the outdrive cooling shower? Anyone knowes how hot the upper drive gets. After all automobile rear axle gears run tens of thousands of miles with just air cooling them. Any documentation of upper gear failure from heat in normal operation not racing.

Buttanic

Re: Question, outdrive shower

It's been hashed out here many times....use the search function.
Basically outdrives do get really hot (especially BravoIII) and they are not in the cool water at speed.
On high HP appilcations they also get really hot.
A drive shower is cheap insurance.

Simrek Corp

Re: Question, outdrive shower

When your boat gets on plane where is the outdrive? It's up, out of the water. If it's out of the water, the only way to dissipate heat is with air. If your drive has a chalky deposit on the case when you trailer your boat, it's a good sign you need one. Anyway, with a shower, your gear lube will run cooler, last longer, won't break down, leading to possible drive failure, cheap insurance.

Don't most drives already have a drive shower? My OMC Cobra drive has water squirting under the top plate.
