Hi, I put this motor on a 2002 Larson 210 runabout with a manual jack plate and 19P prop with Flo-Torq hub II to start as the setup is new to me as boat and engine were purchased separately in the offseason as a project. Boat and motor are both 20" shafts.
I think I have a worn clutch dog and forward gear. The unit slips out of gear in forward and reverse and clunks when going into gear on the water. I tried adjusting the barrel on the cable, but could not adjust it either way where one or the other (fwd and reverse) would not slip out of gear in the water. The shift shaft itself also seemed very sensitive to slipping out of gear when installing the lower unit itself
When I water tested it, I set the jack plate as low as possible, and also tried about half way up (2 holes) with the jack plate adjustment. The motor would go into gear, but once throttled up, it would rev to 4-5K RPMs, and not plane. But, it would idle in fwd gear in and out of the wake zone. I don't think a spun hub could be an issue because I'm using the Flo-Torq kit.
Would a worn fwd gear/clutch dog cause the motor to rev as I have described? The boat still moves fwd, but will not start to plane, and as mentioned will rev to high RPMs.
Trimming the motor up and down made no difference as the symptoms remained.
Thanks for any ideas and help. I just want to make sure that it's not something I'm missing in the setup. Motor has good/even compression.
