Greetings!
I went in recently to replace my powerhead base gasket and exhaust plate gaskets recently on my '87 XR-2 150 HP, and discovered that my upper and lower motor mounts also needed replacing. I am reinstalling factory rubber mounts. The replacement upper mounts seem to fit perfectly in the upper and power exhaust plates, however it seems difficult to get the 2 plates to sandwich back together completely with the mounts installed (even when off the midsection).
I installed the lower mounts first, and then the lower exhaust plate and gaskets on the midsection. When I installed the tightened up the upper mounts, the top plate did not want to completely mate with the lower plate without leaving a slight gap.
Should the plates go back together readily when installing the 5 bolts through the top plate into the lower plate with the mounts installed? Just wondering if there's a "trick" to making this less of a pain to get back together?
Thanks for any suggestions -- just seems like it shouldn't be quite this difficult to get them to mater together snugly with the upper mounts installed.
