I have a (what may be stupid) question... I tried to search the boards, but got so many hits I couldn't narrow it down to find my answer, so I apologize in advance if it's been answered to death.

I'm new at this boat stuff! I purchased a Nissan 4 stroke 5 HP outboard motor (with a 12' PortaBote). Neat stuff!

In the manual, it states that the oil that I need to use is:

SAE 10W-30/40 - (SF, SG, SH, SG)

What is (SF, SG, SH, SG)? Can I just use oil in that viscoscity range that I can get at any gas station? Or is there some "special" oil that I need to get at a marina or something?

Re: Question re:Oil

Mary

Any modern 10W30/40 will be fine. No need to search for "Marine" oil. Just get a major brand and stick with it. Mobil 1 is a good synthetic oil that many on this forum use. Available at Walmart and others.

Re: Question re:Oil

You will probably get full explanations from more knowledgable folks on the meaning of oil specs but the important thing for you to remember is to use what is called for by the manufacturer in order not to void your warranty. You normally can find what you need at any gas station or auto supply store. Have fun. Granpa
