Hello,

I have a '75 Mercury 1500. I'm thinking about adding a manual jack plate to the transom of my boat to create some set back since I need to rebuild the transom anyway. My question pertains to the steering tube. I have seen on other engines/midsections an attachment that extends a bolt-on steering tube several inches forward to accomodate the steering cable/set back and negates having to struggle with the cable bend using the original tube on the midsection.

I can't seem to find one of these and am not sure what they are called? Does iboats carry, or any other ideas?

Thanks for the help!

The dual cable steering on my 88 tracker was damaged from the sharp bends at the engine because of an added jack plate.

My solution was to put 2 more cable holes in the hull so both cables could be naturally routed. One just aft the original rigging hole, and the other just around the corner on the back of the boat. That one is oval as the cable comes through it at a steep angle.

hope it helps
John

Re: question re: steering tube extension

You could mount the steering cable in the splashwell, and use the link to attach to the motor. Those motor-mounted steering tubes may not be compatable with that Merc.

Also, not all Jack plates are compatable with that motor. I recommend you ask the manufacturer, and prepare to drill 4-6 3/8" holes in the jackplate. I had my '77 Merc 1500 on a manual "High jacker" jackplate.

Thanks for the replies all..I will do some more research/trial and eror and determine the best option.

Chris, I also have a 1987 Merc 115 that has that attachment/bolt on steering tube, so I can compare and see if that one will also work on the older Merc.

Re: question re: steering tube extension

My '93 Merc 135HPV6 has four tapped holes in the center of the tilt tube, which could receibe the bolt on steering tube. Your '87 may have something similar.
