Hi, and greetings,
I have a 2002 Larson 20 footer with the VEC composite hull set up for outboards. I recently purchased the boat and noticed that the outer transom skin has separated from the transom core near the top right above the top motor mount holes and the skin developed a 4 inch, 45 degree stress crack at the far right of the motor mounting surface running down and out. (Sorry for not having a picture at the ready to post.)
The core is solid and the transom doesn't budge at all. I'm concerned about the skin delaminating from the core at the top where the upper skin and splashwell cover come together on the motor mounting surface and want to square this away before I mount a motor on it.
In thinking about this repair, would the prescribed approach be to cut out a section of the outer skin out in the affected area, and then sand the removed inner skin, and also sand the exposed core, and then clamp and re-glass it back together - then making the cosmetic repairs on the outside stress crack and cut lines?
I'd feel reasonably confident attempting the repair, just want to figure out the best way to go about it. Thanks for the help and advice!
