Question related to timing a Chrysler 55hp (557HF)

I have the manual for my Chrysler 55hp outboard and I am very familiar with the timing procedure. ( I have read it several times... no problem there)

However, I don't have any way to precisely determine crank position to time the motor.
(spec is 34 degrees before TDC at WOT)

I am mechanically inclined so I think I can estimate fairly close. (+/- 3 degrees)

Can someone tell me how critical timing is on these motors? Will it run ok if I am close?

Any advice is appreciated.

BTW... Did Chrysler offer electric tilt on these motors?

Yes it will run if it is off, even off quite a bit too. However, my timing on both my 55's can drastically effect wot, and general performance. You could buy the special tool in the manual to determine TDC, but if you use a screwdriver in #1, and get close, the rest can be reigned in with a timing light. My 55's run best set at 30 degrees BTDC static. If timing is too far advanced you will have problems, too far retarded and you have problems, so to answer your question, yes timing is very critical on your 55.

I am not sure on the electric tilt on these smaller Chrysler motors, but I have seen a later 50hp Force with it, so I would think one could do some retrofitting. I know lugging that 55 full of water into the up locked position can be a PIA!!

One last thing, having two of these motors has taught me quite a bit. One critical thing I have noticed is that the points setting is critical! These are the most picky points motors I own!
