questions about guide ons

Is there a reason why most guide ons are fitted at the rear of the trailer behind the wheels rather than in front of the wheels?

I ask because I am planning on getting guide ons for my shorelan'r trailer, but the way it is is designed, there is no room behind the wheels to effectively bolt on the guideons without fabricating a special plate or drilling some holes in the frame. I have a trailer with roller bunks.

Re: questions about guide ons

I think it is because the farther back they are, the faster you can use them when you are floating a boat onto the trailer. Guideons are a lifesaver in a strong tide or current, too far forward and they start defeating their purpose. The farther back they are the more effective they are.

You can try these:

Which bolt on from the bottom, using the existing holes in the Shorlandr' trailer.

Or you can try these here, which bolt on the rear crossmember:

The farther back they are the more accurate the loading. Matter of distance and angle.

roscoe,
That 1st set actually attaches with ubolts, and you can bolt to the top or bottom of the frame. Just bought a set, and they work great. They're actually a Shorelandr part. Cabelas only lists black and white. I called Shorelandr, and they gave me the part # for galvanized, and the guys at Cabelas were able to order them for me. For my rig they work perfect.

We have a 24 ft Pontoon boat with a bunk 5 star trailer. I had to lengthen the base of the boat loading roller guides six inches because the roller wouldn't fit on the trailer with the boat on it.It's a four wheeler So this spring I bought another set to put on the inside more to the front. as to guide the boat on even better. It's hard to see the first set of rollers with the boat in the way.

Thanks Gary. I bought the second set for my father's boat, as he has trouble loading.

I have to replace mine this year, and appreciate the info.

Thanks everyone.

Rosco, I saw those at cabela's website, but they are quite expensive at $180 for the pair.

Also for the single u-bolt types, they also will not work. Because the rear crossbar also tilts the roller bunks, the ubolt will actually prevent the bunks from tilting as it will hit the ubolt. I'll try to take pics later to try to show what I am talking about.

They make a great trailer. I would have expected them to have guides.
