Background...

Motor last used about 6 years ago...New impeller/tune up, used once or twice and then put in storage 6 years ago. Always ran fine, except lower unit seemed excessively hot to the touch. Restarted today in the tank just fine. Ran for about 5 minutes to check it out.

Questions:

1) is there suposed to be a spray of water, "pee" stream, out the back of the motor? ...there's currently just hot exhaust.

2) occasionally the motor coughs under load. During the cough, exhaust will exit the side of the motor (viewed when cover is off). Is this a significant concern?

Thanks in advance,
Stephen

You have two distinct issues.

Yes, there should be a telltale stream of water exiting the starboard side of the motor. There may also be some water spray out the upper exhaust ports. If you don't see water coming out the telltale you need to find out why. Cold be a pluged telltale tubing, or could be something in the water pump not providing flow. Check it out before running it that way.

Here's a clip of my motor, where you can see the water steam.

Your motor should not be burping exhaust out the side. Can you see where it is coming from? With the cowl on it coudl be causing your motor to run rough or stall by ingesting its own exhaust fumes. Typical places to look for exhaust leaks would be the powerhead base gasket, and the exhaust covers on the port side. If the leak is on the starboar side, its not likely to be exhaust, but could be combustion gases coming out of the transfer port cover. Can you describe where is comes from?

Looking at the motor from inside the boat, the exhaust is exiting from the left side about midway back on the engine. Cough only appears under load and occasionally, perhaps two or three times the five minutes that it ran.

thanks for the help.
