Hey all, I recently acquired a 1971 Johnson 50 hp twin and am having a few problems with it.

First problem, it starts and runs fine in neutral. Once you get it warmed up, which seems to take a long time, you can let it idle down and it'll stay running. But in order to put it in gear, you have to rev it back up or it'll die. Once you get it in gear and moving fine, running about about 1/8-1/4 throttle its fine. You can then throttle up to about half throttle, but beyond that, you run into problems. The further you open it up, the more it misses. I believe it to be missing from the #2 cylindar as that is the plug that is fouled out. I have already rebuilt the carbs and rebuilt the fuel pump. The engine seems to have good and even compression between the two cylindars. What else could cause this problem? Anything ignition related? I'm not too familiar with this ignition system.

Second question, The motor does not charge. I believe it may have something to do with a little rewiring done. My buddy helped me and unfortunately, in the lack of light and lateness of the day and lack of sleep, he hooked up the battery cables backwards. Beyond that, I have not had a chance to look into this problem as of yet. Any thing I should check first?

Third and final question (for now). The boat has a tach on it, but was not hooked up. Where should I hook that tach up at the motor? The tach has, I believe, just two wires. A black wire and a yellow wire. I assume black goes to ground as it was hooked up to ground previously, but I am unsure as to where the yellow wire should hook into the motor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for looking at my lengthy post and I hope I'll get some help out here. I'm pretty good with automotive stuff, but boat motors leave me stumped. Thanks again! Much Appreciate!

Seth Petro

Hi Seth!

You need to get a service manual for your motor. You need to run a compresion test first of all.

Hopefuly both cylinders will test above 100 pounds. But you can still work with it at less pounds so long as both cylinders test near the same. Any thing below 80 pounds will be hard to work with.

Manual is your main thing rite now tho.

Seth, if the battery leads were reversed it likely fried the rectifier.

Thanks both of you, I do already have a manual. I purchased a Seloc manual. I just need to find the time now to do a compression check and test the rectifier.

Any comments on the Tach connections?

Thanks,

Seth

Ok, update, I checked compression, both cylindars read excellent at 150psi. One coil has a crack in the outer casing, the coil for the lower (misfiring) cylindar. Could this be my running issue? OR is it possibly something under the flywheel?

Thanks,

Seth
