Just got a boat with a Johnson 48 and have some questions. I am new to boating so any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

The model number is J48ESLERD. I know the J is for Johnson, the 48 is for the horsepower, what does the rest mean??

I have dual 12 gal removable tanks. When running the engine, are the vents supposed to be open or closed?

What is the proper fuel/oil mixture and plug gap?

I have had the boat out a couple times and it runs great. However the last time we were out, I suddenly lost all top end power. It seemed like a fuel problem, but everyting checked out. Connections were tight and fuel bulb was a bit soft, but nothing major.

Lastly, a friend of mine (who is supposed to know about boat motors) came over and we ran the motor a bit with a hose hooked up for the cooling. he was checking some stuff and I noticed a greasy like substance around the center of the prop. Is this the oil from the exhaust building up or is it something to worry about.

Thans for the help folks. I look forward to receiving the manual I ordered for the motor soon so that maybe I can give some answers instead of just asking!!!

J=Johnson
48=HP
ES=Electric Start - Special
L= Long Shaft (20")
ER=Year 1994
D=Model run (no Biggie)

Vents must be open on tank when running

50:1 fuel/oil mix 1 pint TC-W3 oil per 6 Gallons of gas

Plug gap is .030 unless you troll alot, then open it up to .040.

Hope this helps...

Oh yeah, greasy mix is unburned fuel. Nothing to worry about..

BTW- Great motors!!
