Hey,
I am going to test drive a 1990 Bayliner Capri 2050 with a 2.3L ford engine with an OMC outdrive. I want to know the compression that these 4 cyliners should have and what the maximum variance should be between them. I would also like to know what else i should look for or do when test driving the boat, are there any problems that these boats have encountered over the years that i should look out for?
Thanks alot

A 20 footer with a 4 cylinder engine.
Make sure when you go on the test ride, take at least two more of your friends with you. When that hull is loaded with weight, you're going to think of at least a V6 engine.

The biggest problem with that boat is it's got an OMC 2.3! THE WORST of the old OMC power plants..
The boat will be a dog! Parts are pretty much non existing for the 2.3 and OMC has been gone for well over 10 years.

To be honest it would have to be a free boat for me to touch it.Then i would strip it,sell the parts and take the hull to the land fill...

Just being honest!

I have a Maxum 2000SR, essentially the same hull with a 3.0. I am pretty happy with the boat, but I have to second other comments that that OMC 2.3 is going to be dang slow in that boat, plus the OMC will be hard to find parts, etc. The bayliner hulls from that period can have maintnenance issues as well (floors are pretty prone to rot) since they weren't well built.

The only way it'd really be close to worth it would be if it is in really good shape, cosmetically and mechanically and you were getting it really, really cheap.

To answer your're original question though, you are looking at 110-150 PSI across all cylinders with about 10% variance. Not real experience with the 2.3/OMC, it's not a common engine combo ever and particularly these days. The bayliners can be prone to wood rot on the floor, transom, stringer and seat areas (pretty much everywhere) if they weren't stored well.

Hey,
I am going to test drive a 1990 Bayliner Capri 2050 with a 2.3L ford engine with an OMC outdrive.

A couple of years ago I replaced a freeze damaged 3.0L Mercruiser engine in a 96 2050 Bayliner with a USENGINE long block.

When we took it over to the local lake for a test drive, I was not surprised with the poor performance with even just 2 of us in it. I would have replaced the 3.0 engine with a V6 or V8.

The new engine ran well and made it to the correct WOT RPM but it was still a DOG! I can imagine the 2.3L model will be even more of a dog.....

That boat was offered with a V-6 and 220hp 5.0L V-8 and I found one with a 5.7L V-8...... That would be nice....

You are probably not going to be all that happy with such an underpowered boat. (nevermind the obsolete Cobra drive:rolleyes:)

Unless you can get it basically for free, sell the engine and drive and then put a Mercruiser V-6 or V-8/drive in it, you should probably keep looking.

Good luck,

Rick

I have a 2.5l merc in my 16.5 footer and want more power. I can't imagine a 20 footer with the same power being impressive.

Unless it's an OMC outboard :)

Evinrude/Johnson outboard parts still more than abundant from years all the way back to the 60's. BRP doing a great job of making them available.

Yes, I agree walk away from that boat unless you plan on repowering.....I couldn't imagine how that must drive....would be horrible to get to plane...and would have worst gas mileage since it would be working so hard just to cruise.

Bayliners are some of the Worst boats out there,, and the 2.3 ford motor sucked. and OMC is long gone.. LOOK for a different boat.. plenty of good deals to be had,, look for a Boat with Mercruiser power or Volvo ..
