Lately I've got a major ground hog problem. They have got under one of my storage sheds undermining the dirt out from under the concrete slab. I've tried the live trap, but I swear I can hear them laughing as they walk by it. So I'm thinking about getting several spring traps. I'd shoot the critters, but they have positioned themselves where it would be possible for a bullet go astray into a populated area. Not even a good idea to think about.

I was just wondering if there is a law against trapping a nuisance of a pest. As far as I know, it is always open season on ground hogs. Thanks......SS

Maybe a new diet rich in rat poison is in order for the offending rodents!!;);):D Of course the supplemental afore mentioned lead injections would be ideal if the lay out were more agreeable.

You will probably have to call your DNR to find out on spring traps.
Use care with either method as far as the neighbors pets go, it wouldn't due to trap or poison them.
We're lousy with raccoons, possums, moles, and chipmunks, so I know how you feel. There is nothing they won't destroy!

Good luck, I hope you win.

Re: Queston on Trapping

My problem is proper timing. I leave for work when its still dark. Otherwise I could position myself in a different area and blastem without worries of a stray fragment. I would do it on my day off, but when Friday comes, its off to the boat until Sunday :D. Gotta get my moneys worth out of my slip fees. Neighbors don't have pets and what does come around is drop offs or what we call road trip kittys :D

I hate to eradicate them lethally, but they have dug down along the foundation of my house, into the hillside by my house, and my shed. I keep telling my wife I need an outside dog to do the job,,,,,,,,,,,,,,THE BOSS said NO!

If you do trap them, say on a Thursday, and you were cool, you could take them for a little boat ride . . . ;)

Re: Queston on Trapping

I'm going to have to get them in the live trap. To use steel spring type traps you must be a licensed trapper. Can't buy a trap unless you have the license.

So I'm stuck with the live trap method. Don't know what to use for bait since there is so much for them to choose from already. Maybe peanut butter will work. I know it works on the much smaller rodents.

QC, I can see me bringing on board a cage with a ground hog in it, then the guy that had his boat rampaged by a coon is going to suspect me of having something to do with it. :D I've never seen a waterskiing ground hog, but there is always a first time for everything.

Heh, I just replied to a post about getting rid of a skunk. I could cut and paste from that answer. Anyway, I had a groundhog living under a front door deck a couple seasons ago. I heard that ammonia soaked rags would get rid of him. I used ammonia soaked pine cones because I didn't want to have to retrieve rags from under the deck. It worked-- he relocated.

Re: Queston on Trapping

two methods come to mind,
garden hose on full out, place in hole, either you drown them out or you wait for them to surface then whack em.
or you can try the propane eradication system, they blow up good I understand.
just a couple of thoughts

Mayfloat, I konw you have a dog.....most every iboater does ! If you dont you've got some friends that do......Shove a water hose in the hole, turn it on, flood em out and watch the fun your dog will have. No traps, no guns just good country fun !

I did this a number of years ago with the exact problem only a different critter. You'd be suprised what a beagle, a dacshaund and and Jack russell can do to a herd varmints running from a flood. Those were my weapons of choice.

Pellet rifle. I have killed several groundhogs via headshots with my 1000fps .177cal rifle. It's good out to 20-25 yards.

Been dealing with the same problem here this year. I've been using a large Hav-A-Heart trap with an apple cut in half as bait. Typically get one within 2-3 hours of setting the trap. Caught 5 already this summer. They can't resist the apples.

"From the How to kill a skunk thread"

put the cage in a trash bag and hooked it up to the exhaust of the car and killed it that way.

Now if you know where the den is, and you have some shop vac hose, and some rags........hmmmm......

Just a thought:D
