Quetions regarding FAQ - Water Intrusion Help

Okay I read the engine FAQ on "Awakening a motor". I had a motor sit for 2 years. My first priority is I have water intrusion into the gear case. I see milky white oil oozing out of the gearcase after starting. In the FAQ all it says is if you have water intrusion to fix it...but doesn't say how. So how do I fix water intrusion in my gearcase? Is it just replace the gaskets between the gearcase housing and the lower unit housing? Is there any seals around the water pump that need to be replaced? Seals around the prop shaft or drive shaft that need to be replaced?

Thanks in advance

PS - I have a 'Rude 1965 33 hp.

All of them if you have a leak. You can pressure test it to see which seal in particular is leaking. But best to tear down the lower unit and do them all so there is no problem in the future. A Manual will have the info you need to do the job ... You may get away with replacing the vent/drain screw seals and hopefully that would do the trick...Try that first....

rickdb1boat,

I have the OEM service manual so I will look to do that. When you say the vent/drain screw seals...are you refering to the drain and fill screws for the gearcasing grease? Or are there other screws that I am not familiar with?

Thanks for the help

Before ripping into it lets make sure that the "white oil" that you see is comming from the inside of the gearcase rather than unburned oil from the fuel mix that will look whitish.

Good question. I know that the engine is not adjusted right as it is running really rich (spark plugs have thick unburnt oil on them). I would take a picture and post it...but my digital camera took a swim while canoeing 2 weekends ago :'(

The best I can explain is that it is almost gray, sluggish fuild that just seaps out around the bottom of the gearcase cover - bottom rounded part of gearcase assembly. I am looking at the OMC parts catalog for this specific motor and it is coming out near the Pivot pin and seal.

So you've drained the lower unit oil and found it milky? First order of business is to replace the fill and vent screw seals and see if that fixes it. They're often the culprit.

After that, you're into a gearcase reseal. It's not a big job on that gearcase and can be done with most simple tools. Iboats, etc, sells a reseal kit, and you can get the seals individually from the dealer. Normal practise is to just replace them all and get everything up to date.

Re: Quetions regarding FAQ - Water Intrusion Help

I have the drain/fill screw and washers on order and will do that first.

Also related...my motor has a 5" extension piece in between the lower unit housing and the gearcase housing. I also have noticed oil (brownish black and more liquidy then the other milky greyish oil) coming out of the bottom of both seams. (between the lower unit and the top of the extension and the bottom of the extension and the gearcase). Could it be that I need to replace gaskets here as well? My manuals don't show that an gaskets or seals for these connections. Thoughts?
