I was wondering how one would tell the difference between an gen1 or gen2 on a Merc Alpha one outdrive? It is in a 94 Crownline Merc 350 mag Alpha One. Any help would be great.
The easiest way is to look for thru bolts and nuts between the upper and lower section of the drive. Gen II's have bolts, Gen I's don't.
Being a 94 also means it's a Gen II. The GI's ended in 90
Don, thank you very much, I had one other question regarding oil change in outdrive. Can I do it like normal(fill through lower hole till it comes out vent hole) and will the level monitor in the engine compartment drain out as well? or can/should I pinch that line off temp while I change the gear lube, then top off through monitor bottle as needed. How much does this take to fill should I get two quarts or is one enough to do the job? My manual hasn't arrived yet and I would like to get a few things done until it does. Thanks again for your help.
Remove the Reservoir cap,+ drain as normal from the drainplug,...
Pull the Vent Plug,...Then pump in the new oil from the bottom as normal,..
When the oil comes out the Vent, replace the screw,+ continue pumping...
You'll need 2 quarts, 1 won't even fill the drive alone...
