Quick answer on iBoat props required. Long winded answers welcome as well.

Hi, all. I have a quick question regarding the propellers here on iBoats: The Solas and TP props that require a hub adapter, are those hubs supplied? It would appear that they are included in the price but that is what I find difficult to understand. Most other suppliers tell you it's a separate part and one buys it separately. It kinda doesn't make sense to me to include it. What if you are purchasing two props and dont need the added cost of and extra redundant hub? I just want to double check before I order.

But while I am on topic perhaps a few of you would like to weigh in on my prop choices.

I recently purchased a Maxum 2400 SC with a 5.0L Mercruiser. I have only had the boat out once for an hour. The dealer who sold it to me said he was a little disappointed with the hole shot and suggested I consider a 4 blade prop ( it currently has a Mercury 3 blade 19" pitch). I was actually surprised at the performance of this boat considering it has the weakest engine available and the prop is a little dinged up. Hole shot seemed reasonable and top end was 41 mph @ 4600 rpm. I believe WOT for this engine is 4400-4800. The only thing I noticed needed improving was how easily it ventilated with trim. On my 90hp outboard on a 17 aluminum, I added Dol-Fins to the plate and have never looked back as they improved almost every characteristic, especially ventilating, but wasn't ready to try that on this stern drive just yet.

But I digress. I have done a lot of research and have decided I want to try a 4 bladed prop. Top end is the least of my concern but fuel economy, low speed planing and manoeuvrability and I hope the extra blade might reduce ventilating too. Over the winter, I invested in a Piranha composite prop with two different pitches for my outboard but I have yet to try it. Actually, this prop SHOULD fit onto the new stern drive but the diameter would be an inch less so probably not an option. A friend of mine has a Piranaha on hid Merc and has no complaints. Actually, every one I have read who has had one recommends them. I will be keeping this boat in salt water in an area prone to high floating debris so the comp prop has the added benefit of resisting corrosion and a quick and easy fix should i hit a dead head. Another added benefit is in the worst case scenario, I can limp home in a 2 blade configuration.
But, my decision is not carved in stone yet. I am still considering buying two aluminum 4 bladed Solas props. It appears they would be slightly cheaper. Since I haven't any long term experience on the comp props, I'm having a little difficulty jumping in head first and need some help deciding.

The other factors that may persuade me either way is the fact that the Piranhas are only available in even number pitched (16, 18, 20). I could go for any pitch with a Solas or TP; but would I? Considering the performance figures I wrote above, should I drop down to an 18" pitch if I am increasing one blade? Etc Etc.

Thanks a heap in advance.

I've never seen the Hub included in a prop purchase. It is generally a seperate purchase.

I just purchased an apollo prop from i boats and the advertised price on the chart included the hub kit. If you removed the kit from the order when it came up it reduced the price.

If you use the prop application guide it will fit whatever mfg you tell it you have. Some props do not need hub kits those are not list separate because they are part of the propeller. If you need a special thrust washer or something it is usually not included.

If it says it needs a hub kit and you do not have the correct one or don't have one at all it will not fit anything.

If you just click on some of the props and put add to cart, when you look at the cart it will list the prop and then list the hub kit. If you don't need the hub kit just click remove. Be carefull on selection as some props require special thrust washers and in the description for some it states that complete hub kits may not be avalible.

The way newer props work is that some have a proprietary hub that will fit your prop shaft as intended but is only meant to fit their brand prop. That forces you to have to buy a new hub if you change prop brands. Of course there was a time when the hub was just built in. Now that said, I just replaced my less than two year old Turning Point Hustler that required a special Turning Point Hub kit. Since I obviously already had the hub kit I bought the identical prop only to find out (even though I called to verify it would fit, the sales rep was wrong) that Turning Point has changed their props to fit multiple different, proprietary hubs plus their now redesigned hub but not the former hub that itself wasn't that old a design. In that case I just went and bought a hub locally that was in the fitment chart. The Michigan Wheel and Flo Torque II hubs fit the TPH and the Michigan was cheaper so went with that. Also, I'll mention that the hub kid did indeed include the thrust washer while the former proprietary Turning Point Hub did not and I had to use the OEM thrust washer.

The merc and quicksilver props almost always come with the hub kit.

This is what I find confusing: Some props DO show a hub part number that appears like it is included in the package.

http://boatpropellers.iboats.com/Me...9.00&chart=77&engine_id=767&*******=721310812

When it does not show this, what mfg does the prop fit? I need a prop for a Mercruiser.

Most of the solas and turing point props do not have a separate hub, it is just part of the prop

Don't think that is the case at least with Turning Point. They go to excrusiating effort to let you know that the hub is separate and not included. They just forgot to let current customers know that they changed hub systems. I looked a handful of props and each one no longer had a built in hub but a one you could quickly replace as a separate unit if needed. http://www.turningpointpropellers.c...127519Tb&PW_UI_V2=INFO_Hub_System&#infoAnchor

For all of the props I've bought over the recent years, the idea of a built in hub that wasn't quickly replacable on the water was a thing of the past. My older boats and older engines all have a hub and prop as one unit though.

Guess it depends on the age of the prop. The 5 year old turning point hustler that I have is an integrated hub. The solas Amita 4 blades that I just bought last week are also integrated hubs.

What I've figured out is that prop technology moves quickly. Boat designs seem to take forever to move forward but prop tech seem to be ever changing. I'm suprised a new prop for an I/O would still have an integrated hub in 2012. The market moved to the ability to keep your hub, but quickly change props as needed depending on what you are doing that day. The move away from integrated hubs was a big leap forward. Soon we'll be talking about the Flo Torque VI hub. When an intigrated hub gets spun or damaged you can't change it out with ease. On Craigs List I'll see SS props for sale that are older but have a damaged/unusable hub that need to be fixed commercially.

I'm not real worried about spinning a hub on the props, I've got 140 screaming HP ;) I bought a second solas and I'm getting rid of the 14.25x21 3 blade merc stuff with the hubs. In my experience the separate hubs don't add anything, they are a pain - more pieces to fall in the water when changing a prop on the lake ;)

Agreed! And hence the basis for my query. But...when I selected a TP prop from the list of various mfg's props based on my engine, the hub WAS shown as part of the package, YET, the price seemed to suggest it wasn't included. No matter,I went ahead and bought a Piranha prop an hour ago.
