Quick Evinrude Question....

What's a typical compression value for a 76' 4HP 'Rude?? It sure looks like the original rings as the powerhead still has the factory paint. I figured that it depends on the hours used, oil mix and load ect, but there's no real way to know the history of this little popper. What can I expect the compression after a rebuild, new rings, bore deglaze etc.
I was told by a marine wrench , NOT to redo the rings, and deglaze,he said, if both cyl's are the same compression, don't bother. Both cylinders are at about 60lbs. now which seems low to me. The powerhead does show signs of an overheat. The impeller was toast, so was the water pump housing. Too much friction melted the housing. It must have been run dry. I installed a water pump kit, blew out the water passages with air and water, now it cools just fine. Could the overheat have burned the rings causing the low compression?
The cylinder walls are glazed but have no scoring of any kind.

Thanks in advance for any info, as I can't seem to find this info in the manuals.

Re: Quick Evinrude Question....

Your engine is probably okay. Hand start engines will show lower numbers, but as your wrench said, if they match you are okay.

Good luck. :)
