Quick Fuel fitting question

I have an older (1986) Mercury 35 hp outboard.

It currently has the older style barb type quick connect fittings. My fitting down at the fuel tank is sucking air.

Can I change out that older barb style fitting for a male and female of the newer style 2 prong clip on fittings? They seem like they are a better connection.

Anyone? Someone has to know. Does the year of the engine have any impact on what fuel fittings I use on the tank end of the fuel line?

And I think that those older fittings are a far better quality.----Trouble is most shops do not want to repair / install a kit in them.----See if you can do this easy repair yourself !

You can change to any type of fitting, or direct connection at any time. The motor doesn't care.
