Need to know if the shift cable from the remote control is a push or pull?

If I move the "shifter" on top of the engine toward the bow, is that forward or reverse? I assume its forward since its toward the bow.

Shift the remote, and you will know?

The I'm hooking the cables to the lever now. To get them connected correctly i need to know which way is forward on the shift mechanism on the engine. i.e. it would be real easy to get this installed with fwd = rev and rev=fwd :)

You need to read the manual on your boat

There are measurements involved at the back, and there is certain holes to use on the remote.

What kind of remote is it?

Re: Quick - Is the shift cable a push or pull from the throttle control?

Lets make this simple. The shift cable connects to the engine. And then to the drive. On the top of the engine, the shifter moves forward and back (toward the bow and toward the stern). I assume the shifter moving toward the bow is forward, and the shifter moving toward the stern is reverse.

Now, I can deduce (if that is correct) where the shifter cable needs to connect to my controller.

Now, can someone tell me if my information about the direction of the shifter/clutch thingie is correct? :)

Most controls can be changed to go either direction.
Go HERE and go to page 2A-34. It will explain what you need to know. Also have a look at the rest of the section, you WILL need it.

PS: Here is a link to the full manual.

Don Thanks again. I tried looking in the drive manual before but didn't see it so I'll check your link. Thanks again.

Do you have a second to read my second post?

Thanks again everyone for your patience and understanding

Since I'm replacing the controller, isn't the propeller already setup to go in a certain direction? i.e the shift cable is already connected to the engine and then to the drive. I only disconnected it from the controller end from my old controller.

If I provide a picture of the prop can you tell me which direction (RH or LH) it should turn to move the boat forward?

Or perhaps a prop number? 48-13702-A40-21

21 P, the A40...even number, does that mean a RH propeller?

Update:

Prop was indeed a RH prop, so I followed the instructions to figure out which way the cable was supposed to shift for RH rotation and connected my cable to the correct point on my new throttle.

Thanks again Don!

(Apologies for being such a pain, but still learning my way around this engine and various parts).

I just replaced my controller for my Volvo. Thought I connected it up right until I was leaving the dock. Thankfully, no one was in front of me that day as I tried to back away from the dock!!!

Thats EXACTLY what I was afraid would happen so I wanted to make sure it was corrected correctly. Before I left the house I made sure my wife looked at the prop when I engaged forward to make sure the prop turned to the right and thankfully it did.

:)
