Quick oil change question

Hey everyone,

I'll be doing an end of season oil change in the next few weeks, and I'm looking for some tips on how to make this as fast and easy as possible. I've read about the quick oil drain hose that's sometimes attached to the drain plug of the boat. No such hose is attached to my plug, but I found this:

Is this that hose? Sure looks like it to me, as it is connected directly to the oil sump. How much of a PITA would it be to get this thing down and through the drain plug? I think it's what's known as a garboard plug which appears to be smaller in diameter than the more traditional style, will it fit? Trying to avoid purchasing an oil change pump!

Also it appears that the oil filter is mounted in a very inconvenient location; right behind some water hoses. Any tricks to avoid dumping lots of oil in the bilge when changing it? Also, has anyone done a remote oil filter mount, like maybe relocating it to the drive lube monitor bracket?

Thanks!

No comment on the hose, but, I custom cut a 1 gal bleach bottle down to where it fits under the oil filter, has kept my bilge in pretty good shape after oil changes....

Ayuh,... Can't see what you've got yer finger under...
Whatever it is, Follow it, if it goes to the bottom of the oil pan, you've found it...

For filter,...
Crack it loose with a filter wrench, then slip a plastic baggy around it, 'n continue screwin' it off...
The oil, 'n the filter falls into the baggy, rather than the bilge...

btw,... NOTHING is Convenient when workin' on boats...
but, Ya, you can mount up a remote filter if ya want to...

Yeah, looks like your finger is holding the metal retaining clip.
Here's a picture of an oil change drain kit:

It can be tricky depending on how much access you have. I might suggest you take off the retaining clip and attach a long wire to the plug (at the end of the hose) and snake it thru the drain. Warm up the oil before changing.

That is the hose for your oil change...the garboard plug should have the short wire that you can attach this hose to. Then you remove your garboard plug and pull this hose outside the bilge.

But...most oil change pumps are able to attach right to this hose. That is why this hose is clipped somewhere around the engine, and the owner has the choice of using the garboard drain or leaving this hose available as yours is. When you read the descriptions of the various pumps out there, look for the ones that tell you that they have the fitting for this oil change hose.

Happy boating!
