1972 50 horse evinrude, Been working on it a while and it sounds and runs great. I tried adjusting the throttle cable and got it to run about 1100 rpm in the driveway at idle I had noticed before that it would'nt idle that high in the water. Same thing tonight. Idle dropped down to about 400 rpm. I opened the hood and adjusted the idle to 1000 in nutural then drops down to about 700 in gear sitting on the trailer. Should this engine idle faster without adjusting the idle screw wich in turn opens up the butterflys a little? Also if I take my timming light down to the river with me to make sure I'm getting 19 degrees at 3500 rpm will it hurt the motor to rev it up that high just sitting on the trailer but in the water?

Get to a dock and tie your boat off put it in reverse with the boat still tied to the dock and adjust the idle where is will stay running and not cut off. Then let it run at idle with no load and fine tune. You will be good to go.

Not exactly sure of your engine, but you should have an idle screw. By putting a load on the engine and setting your idle, when your docking, with your idle set with a load, it will keep you from stalling as well as idle in neutral at the right rpm.
