I have a 1989 Stingray SVB 176. They also made a SVB 170, which is the exact boat but with an outboard.

What exactly do they change on the boat from I/O to Outboard. Is the back just cut out and set up for an outboard.

The reason i ask is because i found a mooring cover for my boat at a boat salvage yard, off of a outboard version. Now i know the bowrider mooring cover will fit, but what do you think about the cockpit? FWIW all snaps are forward of the outboard.

Basically 3 things. 1) The stringers will have engine beds for the I/O, whereas the O/B doesn't need them. 2) The transom is cutout on the hull to accomodate the splashwell. Most likely there were 2 different deck molds, with the O/B version having a splashwell molded into it. 3) There will be a motor box in the cockpit on the I/O, not on the O/B.

Thanks for the reply! In your opinion would the cockpit cover be interchangeable? It is a very good deal at both covers for $50

The cockpit cover will likely conform to the outline of the splashwell, so you'll have an area that isn't covered. The snaps may not line up. A lot can happen in the 21 years the boat has been around, and this may be a non-stock cover with snaps in places other than where the original had them. My cockpit has a number of extra snaps, so I know that I don't have the factory cover.

I agree the Bow cover should fit, that being said I don't think the cockpit cover will match up.

At $50 for the set, I would be tempted to buy them both and have a local shop add a panel to fill in the gap from the splashwell opening.

Re: Quick question for the gurus

they are 2 totally different boats. different center of gravity, etc. most who do this conversion, are not happy with the results.

What about the bow cover, that should fit though correct? Cant imagine the bow being totally different.

Re: Quick question for the gurus

First of all, note the model numbers of each boat. It's possible that the 176 is 6 inches longer than the 170. Not guaranteed, but possible to take into account centre of gravity or other adjustments between I/O and outboard so be ready for overall length issues with one or both covers.

You may have issues with snaps too. Unless I'm mistaken the snaps would have been installed on the boat by hand, then installed in the cover. Or possibly vice versa. Anyway, my point is that the snap position on the cover may be unique to the boat you are taking the cover off. It's not like transferring mass produced parts from one car to another. Not that you can't reinstall more snaps in the correct locations on the cover, just be prepared for a little work (and lots of extra snaps on your covers!)

I too would consider taking both covers and modifying the cockpit cover to fit. You'd be most of the way there but again may have snap placement issues as well as the extra panel to sew in.

Good luck and report back!

Re: Quick question for the gurus

The 176 and the 170 were exactly the same boat except for the transom. The bow compartments were exactly the same.

During that era, Stingray supplied the convertible top as standard, and the other canvas was optional. They used a vinyl covered canvas like material, not Sunbrella or the newer type fabrics. The Windshield and tops were made by Waterbonnet. I don't know about the dealer that sold your boat, but the 2 Stingray dealers in my area hardly ever ordered factory canvas.....they all had it made locally. If you didn't order factory canvas the boat came without snaps.

Stingray was noted for making subtle changes year to year. So, if the canvas you are looking at is not from the EXACT same year, it probably won't fit. If it is the same year, its probably a 50/50 chance.

If you are looking to cover the boat while trailering, buy a Carver ready made Semi Custom Fit. They aren't too expensive. If you want to cover the boat in the water, a local canvas maker can adapt to your snaps without a problem.
