Hi All,

J120TLESB

I just want to verify how to disable quickstart as I've read 3 different things.

I set my MSA a couple weeks ago with Joe's method but I want to make sure it's close before I tow it to the ramp with the test wheel tomorrow.

Some say that to disable the quickstart, you simply disconnect the blk/white wire. Other posts have stated that you need to ground the pp side.

Other threads say that no matter what, it won't disable until it spins at X rpms for 5? seconds.

Could someone clear this up for me? I just want to be in the right neighborhood with the timing before I fine tune it.

Thanks again,
Alden

Check quik-start with a timing light at start-up, when it kicks out proceed as normal. You should be able to here it kick out.

Ground the wht/blk wire and that will diable it. You will here the engine die down some when you ground that wire. But remember everytime you shut the engine of it resets the quickstart. Youll have to ground the wht/blk wire wire again.

Re: Quick question on disabling quickstart.

Thanks for the responses. The thing is though is that Joe Reeves method involves getting the timing close without running the engine, only spinning it w/plugs out.

I don't want to start and rev the thing to 5k without seeing if it's close to start with. I don't want to melt a piston or cause some other problem.

Does it have to be running to disable it?

Re: Quick question on disabling quickstart.

My information is that Quikstart is a special timer base that automatically advances the timing each time the ignition is started for 5 seconds regardless.
It advances timing when the powerhead is below 96 degrees F. or 105 degrees F. depending on the model.
It cuts out when the RPM exceeds around 1100 RPM, which is why controls with a warm up lever can override it.
The tests of Quikstart indicate that if it does not perform properly, there is some outside condition that should not be ignored, such as a malfunctioning temperature senser.
