Quick Start

The quick start on my motor in my signature will not go below 1100 rpm's. Even after a 10 minute high speed run, it's still at about 1100rpm's. My factory service manual states to replace the power pack.
3 questions, first is the diagnosis correct?
2nd, is there anything I could have done to cause this to go or do they just go from time to time?
3rd, buy one from Evinrude or one of the aftermarket ones available?

I do have 2 starting batteries and a Perko battey switch. I usually switch it to bat 1 and just run off of that. I don't switch it to bat 2 because I have the 2 starting batteries and a deep cycle wired to an onboard 3 bank battery charger to keep all 3 batteries fresh.
I have not done anything to the motor with the exception of changing the spark plugs.

Re: Quick Start

The Quick Start system has a temp sender in it to tell the power pack when the engine is cold or warm. If the sender fails and gives the power pack a cold reading all the time, it will never idle down. The sender is a two wire sender on the port head. I'd replace that first.

Test the temp. sensor before you replace it. It's located in the port side head. There are 2 wires going to it - one white, one tan. There's a connector between the engine wiring harness and the the sensor. Disconnect the sensor, then ground the tan wire from the harness. If the motor slows down the sensor is bad.

There are additional sensor tests you can do (they're in your manual), but this one will tell you immediately if the sensor is failing to signal the quickstart system to turn off.

Re: Quick Start

The service manual states that if the quick start stays on after running it over 1100 rpm's, then replace the power pack.
It goes on further to state that if it stays on ignoring time and/or temperature when engine is operated below 1100 rpm's then check for:
1. Check for trace amounts of voltage on power pack yellow/red indicating bad starter solinoid.
2. Check for damaged port temperature switch.
3. Check for open power pack white/black lead or damaged connectors.
4. Check engine temp for overcooling.
5. Replace power pack.
The way I understand the system is if the engine is operated above 1100 rpm's then the quick start is supposed to shut off regardless of time or temp. My quick start stays on even after a long(10 minute WOT run) which according to the manual it states to replace the power pack.
Any second opinions out there??

The Quickstart operates by advancing the timing to make the engine idle faster until it warms up. It disengages (goes back to base timing) at any RPM over 1100 RPM once you fall below 1100 RPM, it will go back into Quickstart mode if the powerpack thinks it's cold. A bad temp sender will cause the power pack to think it is cold and keep it in Quick start mode below 1100 RPM.

Also, Item #4 in your list tells you to check the temparature of the engine to be sure it is even warming up properly. A thermostat stuck open will cause the engie to not warm up, causing the sender not to send a signal to the power pack telling it the engine is warm...... etc........................

Check the port side head temp and if it is warming up to specs, check and replace the sender.

Re: Quick Start

It could still be the powere pack, but personally, I'd exhaust everything else including buying a new sender just to be sure before I went and spent a couple hundred for a power pack.

Re: Quick Start

Thank you, I understand now. I didn't know it would go back into quick start mode without shutting off the key.
