Ayuh,... I'd mothball it with some sorta spray oil,...

Fogging oil sprayed anywhere, 'n everywhere possible would work...
Squirt a shot into each cylinder, 'n roll it over by hand...
Why is the base still dry,..??
I'd fill the oil, mothball it, 'n plastic bag it... Then tarp it, twice...

Re: quick volvo engine question

My engine is staying in the garage for the winter . . . all oiled up, fogged, drained and kept relatively warm.

I'd do everything you can to keep your freshly rebuilt engine protected.

Make sure the block is drained of water, that would be your biggest problem. Rather there is oil in the pan or not doesn't mean much for the rest of the engine, the crankshaft nor anything else is in the oil when not running.
Keep water off the engine and keep it covered as Bond-o mentioned and you should be good to go. Just don't cover it with clear plastic sheets, they act like a green house. Dark green trash bags work much better.
