You guys seen these?

http://www.kwikset.com/smartseries/smartkey.aspx

I replaced my entry door in the garage yesterday as well as all of our exterior door locks. We bought these smart key locks. You can re-key them yourself any time you like. Once we had all 5 locks installed, we re-keyed them all in about 10 minutes. We had enough keys left over to re-key again later if we wish. You can also buy a re-key set that comes with a few keys and the little tool.

To re-key, all you do is:

1. Insert the working key and turn 1/4 clockwise.
2. Stick in the little tool and pull it back out.
3. Take out the key and put in your new key.
4. Turn the new key 1/4 turn counter-clockwise and remove.

That's it. Really cool.

BTW, that's the first prehung door I've ever installed. From removal of the old to installing the new one took me about 5 hours. It also took dang near every tool I own lol. I'm sure someone that knew what they were doing could do this in an hour or less. At least I learned something new.

Re: Quickset Smart Key Locks

I just got thru replacing all my locks and a door. I was able to buy keyed alike for the smaller doors and got one of those smart key jobs for the front door. Now all my doors take the same key. I really made out on mine as Lowes had them sitting on the wrong shelf with a sign indicating they were $100 cheaper than marked. When I went to check out a sweet young thing went with me to the register to make sure I got them at that price. She sure was purdy!

I know that routine. 15 trips to the tool locker during the course of the job, then get out the wheelbarrow to carry them all back when you are done.

I just installed a new front door set but I have not tried the re-key deal yet.

Yea...
I got everything I thought I would need, then several trips to the "barn" for this and that. Then realized the wire for the doorbell was too short. Had to round up some wire, strippers, soldering kit, shrink tubing etc.. Fixed that up right. Installing the lock... some things didn't quite fit. Back to the barn for the Dremel kit. I just loaded it all on the back of the truck and drove it back to the barn to put everything away.

That's the downside to having pegboard. All my tools are very organized, but when I'm not working in the barn, I make lots of trips. Oh well. At least I have good tools to work with.
