Quicksilver 3000 Classic controller question - what stops the move wires from wear?

Hi,

I purchased a good used Mercruiser Alpha one Generation 2 drive for a conversion on my former jet boat.

I have assembled the controller which came with the drive (Quicksilver 3000 Classic) but when I move the throttle lever forward and reverse I can feel resistance from the wires catching on something.

I closer look at the wires reveals scratching of the insulation.

Please see the pics and provide advice.

I am sure there must be a missing part to prevent the wires from touching sharp edges.

Regards,
AD

I found a pdf on the Mercury web site that covered a number of controllers including the 3000 Commander. You'll probably find another pdf on the same site that covers the 3000 Classic.

I went back to the Mercury site where I "remembered" finding the pdf. Now I can't find it :( Maybe I got it somewhere else. I'll see if I can figure it out and let you know.

Here's where I found the manual that I downloaded: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B1T...BhYy00MjlmLTg5NzktMjQyZDJhMGQ3YzQ1/edit?pli=1

Got it from an iboars thread about a year ago. As I noted, doesn't appear to cover the 3000 Classic. Is the 3000 Commander similar? Or, maybe you can backtrack from the above link to find a pdf that does cover the Classic?

you are a legend Minuteman!

Actually my controller appears to be in that manual (or at least something very similar).

Thanks to this manual I confirmed there are no missing pieces.

The wires still don't move freely when you move the shaft to forward and reverse. I may need to file back the sharp edges and use a plastic sleeve to protect the wires from wear.

I note the 4000 model features a huge hole for the wires to pass through without any edges to catch on.
