QuickSilver 3000 Controller Info

I purchased a 1994 Starcraft with a QuickSilver 3000 Controller. I was quickly ran through the controls but must have missed one of the many gadgets on this thing. I understand how to use the tilt, throttle and anchor rise, but there is this extra button on the handle that I am not sure of. I put the boat in the water yesterday and had the most difficult time getting it started. I saw the button in question and pushed it while starting and the boat quickly started. Needless to say the throttle was all the way forward and caused the rpm to shoot high. Can someone explain the use of this button. Thanks Ron

It sounds like the cold start release button when in neutral you push the button in and it releases the shift mechanism to allow you to pump the throttle or advance it to help start a cold or flooded engine, when you return the lever to neutral the button pops out and then the shift is reingaged

Thanks Laddies, how much advancement should I advance, just out of neutral or full throttle. I would think just enough throttle since I ended up revving the rpm to high. Thanks again

That's what it is. Procedure is to depress the button.....flush with the handle then put the shift lever in the forward position like 10-15 degrees. Do not push it all the way down.....like where it would be at WOT in Forward running down the lake. If you do, when she hits your rpm's will go out of sight.

My button is somewhat stubborn in that I have to move the shift lever just slightly backwards whild holding in on the button to get it to work.

To start just get the switch in and set the shift lever where I mentioned......right now it is only functioning as the throttle.

Push in on the key and turn 1 click cw which is the RUN position. Wait a few seconds and allow the thermostart to pump fuel into your engine then while holding in (does a similar function to what used to be a choke...enriches the fuel air mixture), then continue turning cw and the starter will turn over. Hold it till she starts but the book says not over 30 seconds to prevent overheating the starter.

Several tries may be necessary. Once the engine hits, you can move the throttle back and forth (like an accelerator in a car) and control the revs of the engine......just stay away from N till you are through with warmup. I like to run up to around 2000 and let it run for a couple of minutes to get some heat into the block.

Do not let it come back to the N position until you are ready to move out. If you do, the button will pop out and you will be in the normal shift/throttle function.

On the thermostart thing, only use it on initial startup or if you have been stopped for some time and the engine does not respond to just key turn starting.

I'd say that after sitting try just the key turn. Then add the fast idle if necessary, and lastly if necessary, the thermostart.

If you only stop for a few minutes, the engine should respond to just a turn of the key in N.

If in doubt as to whether or not you got the switch adequately pushed in just try to start. If the starter spins in the START position you did it. If not the start circuit thinks you are in F gear and it will not let you start.

HTH

Mark

Re: QuickSilver 3000 Controller Info

Thanks TexasMark, That was well explained. I will be going out this weekend and will try this. Nothing says your a Novice boater, like sitting in the middle of the boat ramp with 10 people waiting and your trying to get your boat started. That was me this weekend. Thanks for the valued info.

Mark,

Your little tidbit above helped me figure out why my advanced throttle wasn't working while depressing the button. You mentioned that you have to slightly move your shift lever back to get it to engage so I went out to my boat to see if that's what was wrong with mine......Yep, I tried depressing the button and then moving slightly back and then forward and that was the trick.

Now, I'm able to use the advance start and start it easily. Appreciate you mentioning this thread to me in the Merc forum.

Ark,

Glad you caught it. With todays lean engines you almost have to have fast idle to get the things running in the colder weather.

The best design I saw and used started out as an OMC design (I guess) where the unit bolted onto the bulkhead with the cables entering from the rear and exposed. Then right above the cable entry was the key for starting and above and on top was a separate lever for fast idle; just raise it up, independent of everything else, and you had it. I had one on a '72 OMC and bought one for my '89 Merc.

The problem is that the cables are in sight and the 3000 makes for a cleaner looking installation....but if I have any more trouble out of mine, off she comes and on will go the type I mentioned.

Mark
