hi folks

took out my "new" used boat out today for the first time and had a bit of a problem.

if anyone can point me in the right direction, i'd appreciated very MUCH.

i have a 1994 mercury O/B 90hp with the quicksilver 3000 control unit.

after a sucessful launch, i started the engine and attempted to back the boat away from the dock. to my horror, the boat wouldn't go into reverse but lunged forward even i clearly had the control unit in the reverse mode. no damage to the boat so far. whewwww!!!!

no problem, i'll just use the kicker motor to get me out of the dock area and i'll kick over the big motor to get it going again.

afterward and findinf myself in the middle of the harbor, i attempted to start up the big motor. it kicked over nicely but i couldn't get it to go into neutral so that the boat wouldn't stop moving forward even though i had the control unit in the neutral position. nevertheless, i had a nice cruise around the harbor anyway.

afterward, i went back to the dock and trailered up my boat. i went to the wash down area and hooked up my flush kit. i started the engine up and to my horror the second time in one afternoon, the engine is going at about 10,000 RPM and the propeller is spinning twice as fast.

i turned off the engine right away and tried it four more times but to no avail.

i went into the boat and played around with the control unit thinking that it was stuck but on the
fifth try, the same problem presisted.

im at a lost at this point but think that i have a stuck control unit or a stuck throttle cable with my limited knowledge of the boat motor in general.

any helpis appreciated.

thanks and appologize for being so wordy.

jon

Re: quicksilver control unit

Wow, sounds like you have several issues to deal with. First thing to do is get a manual for your motor. It will be invaluable.
1) The forward/reverse thing could be the linkages not hooked up properly to the control or the shift shaft was not not aligned properly when the lower unit was removed/re-installed on the motor.
2) A motor must NEVER be able to start while in-gear. Your neutral safety switch is not working.
3) Wacky throttle control could be control again but could also be linkage connections in the motor. You will need a manual to check and set thinks up properly.
A motor starting while in-gear with random throttle control is a recipe for disaster, in and out of the water. Don't take the boat out again until you get it fixed.
