Quicksilver Grease(s)

Hey All,

Doing an impeller change this weekend and thought I would pick up some spline grease for the prop and drive shaft. While looking through West Marine I noticed that there are 5 or 6 types of quicksilver grease, 2-C-4, gimble and U-joint, engine coupler, Special 101, etc.

Not meaning to sound cheap or like a total noob, but is there a general "all around" lube/grease that can be used or do I have to buy specific grease for each job?

Thanks

Re: Quicksilver Grese(s)

For both my boats, I buy and use each of the special Mercury lubricants in exactly the spot the factory manual specifies. I like my boats and want them to run as good as possible and have the best chance to have fewer problems. Why do anything else to save a few bucks? I buy the larger cartridge and have a gun with each type loaded and ready to go; keeps down the time for changing cartridges and any waste. I'm sure someone with much more knowledge thank I can explain the properties of each and why you would not want to use them in certain places but for me it's just easier/better to use what's recommended.

I use two: 2-4-C for the prop shaft and gimbal ring pivot points. I use bearing and U-joint grease for the gimbal bearing, u-joints and coupler splines. Bought a tube of each and a couple of cheap guns at Walmart. Should last for years.

I just use marine grease on everything, but I don't have an alpha drive.

I wonder what Bond-o will have to say about grease?

I just use marine grease on all the zerks and this time around I even used it on the prop shaft and impeller drive shaft splines. I do use gimbal bearing grease on the gimbal bearing, though. I would also like to know the importance of having 6 different types of grease around!

I'm also in the same position, wondering if I can use just one grease. I have read that some people use that "green grease" on everything. I was intending on using the mercury specific greases but am having a hard time locating it locally.

I agree with 90 stingray-- If I had to pick 1 grease it would be green grease.
