Hi, I am putting in a new console and not sure how to remove and then install the Quicksilver throttle/ tilt-trim control. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks, John

On the front of the cover is a button you just push in.
The cover comes off and then there are two bolts on the side.
Undo them and the shifter should pull out.
The base is held in with 4 screws and nuts.
Undo them to remove the base.

Could just be wedged in tight.

control cables do come off, have to remove the plate on the one side. Don’t recall whether you can get that plate off without first pulling the whole assembly up and out of the dash.

Thanks Guys, The actual shift handle and button assembly is still attached and doesn't want to pull off. Am I pulling everything, plus the 2 cables, up and out and then figuring out how to disconnect the 2 cables??

Pull harder and maybe tap from the back. It looks like the opening is just barely enough to feed the control from the top side and is wedged in place now.

Yes, that's right.

BTW, Google "Merc Controls Newest Manual" and you'll find some file-sharing sites (choose your favorite) that have the manual you'll want.

You have the Mercury Commander Console Mount Control (section 4D in the manual)

EDIT: also, here's a link to another thread about the crappy tilt/trim paddle switch on that control (and a direct link to the manual), and how I managed a "work-around" on mine:

Thanks so much AJ.I'm having a bit of trouble with the download, but will figure out. Shift box was just very tight. I got it out and disconnected the 2 cables, but it was an ordeal. Had to remove a spring to get at the locknut for one of them and it went flying! Big learning curve, but fun. I'm now having an issue with the steering (see pix). Pulled out the cable from the back side of the steering, but can't figure out how to completely disconnect. When unscrewing the 3 nuts from the underside the bolt turns along with it. Figure I've got a bolt head to hold while unscrewing the nut, but can't get the steering wheel off?? Can you help? Thanks again

Thanks to everyone for the help! Got everything off the old console. Hoping a won't have an issue pushing the steering cable back in it's housing. Grease it up good I suppose!

The flying spring: next time try shifting the control into gear and the nut will move into a
position that you can access for removal.

Hi Guys, finally got my new console and put everything back together. Started up fine and ran, but when I engaged 'forward' it didn't appear to speed up the prop as much as it should as I increased rpm's. Then I tried reverse and the prop never went counter clockwise as it should have. I've included pix I took before removing the throttle cables. I double checked putting it back together, but must have screwed something up. Looking again at the photos I might have put the spacers on top of the cable bushings rather than underneath? Wouldn't think that would affect it since it shifts smoothly both full forward and reverse. Thanks for any help!

Try shifting when off.
Have someone shift while you turn the prop by hand.
Just shifting without the prop moving can bind and damage and stretch the cable.

You should be able to shift and feel the dog engage.
NO? then undo the linkage at the shift rod( the tiny pin and cotter key)
Then shift with a pair of pliers and see if it works then??
NO? then the drive needs work.
Yes then the linkage needs adjustment.

The first 3 posts in this forum might cover the linkage adjustments.

I'm including 3 new photos of the cables/box after taking back out this morning. What I'm seeing is the throttle cable moving when I go from neut, rev, forward, but the shift cable (the underneath cable) not moving. Somehow that cam is not connected?? I didn't have any left over parts. Trying to figure how the 2 cams should be connected and move together?? I'll keep investigating while hoping for a tip! Thanks!

Fixed! The connector/tab was not in properly. I didn't have the shift cable below the spacer. I had it just like the throttle spacer which is above the spacer. Duh! Thanks Guys!
