Hey All, I have recently installed a 9.9 mariner kicker on my old Blue Fin. The motor and 2 sets of controls came with boat. NO keys with either controls. I took control apart and ordered correct key for the set of controls that fit boat best. No problems so far. Motor starts with one pull and runs great. Took to river to try it all out with new Stearns steering connections and new key for electric start. Turn key and motor turns over but won,t start. Tried several times and put the little switch under the key in up and down positions. No luck... Disconnect the electric cable at motor and try to pull start it. Starts right up and runs great. Plug cable back in and motor dies with the key in the run position. I would be thankful for any help, ideas etc any of you could give. Thanks
Ron

Re: quik silver controls 9.9 mariner

You are aware the these engines use a ground wire to kill the ignition system, not a power wire to run it, yes?

There should be a few wires on the back of the switch, a ground (black), a kill wire (black/yellow), a battery wire (red), an ignition wire (purple) and for electric start engines, a choke wire (yellow/black) and a start wire (yellow/red).

Make sure the kill wire is not grounded with the key ON....

Re: quik silver controls 9.9 mariner

Thank you for the reply. I will check wires on back of switch. I was wondering if all quiksilver controls are wired the same? The key will make the starter go but it must be grounding out as you pointed out. I do not know if these controls were for this motor or another, does it matter or are marine control sets the same for each brand? I will try to find a wiring diagram also and see what wire would be for the kill switch or key off position. Thanks for your help.

All Merc controls are the same (wiring is the same for all Merc engines). Do you have a manual? What year is the engine?

No manual and never checked the year yet. I Got the boat and stuck this 9.9 in the shed until this year. I think it is from the eighties if I had to guess. Maybe the switch itself is bad inside. I will have to check and see if the other set of controls takes the same key and plug that one in and see if it will run or just turn over.

That's a 1990, electric long shaft with remote controls.... Most of which you already knew...

Here's what to do.... Get a multimeter and find the pin in the engine harness that runs to the kill wire on the ignition pack (that will be the black/yellow one). Then find the ground pin. Now on the plug on the harness to the remote control put the meter between these pins. With the key OFF it should be close to a short, with the key ON it should be an open circuit....

Should be pins 1 and 4 according to this drawing....

Thank you very much for the info and diagram. I will try as you suggest and see what turns up. I will not be able to work on boat for a week or two. Our county fair starts next week and my daughter will have me busy helping to get ready. Thanks again and will post results.
