I have a 1991 40hp Evinrude outboard and I what to change the prop anode and seals. I am mechanicly inclined and have tackled other routine maintenance and repairs on the engine already. I am wondering if this jod may be to difficult, or if there are any special tools\pullers required for the job. I have a Clymer shop manual, but it seems a little vague in reguards to a prop seal change. Please advise.

Re: R&R Prop Seal

Welcome theworm.....

Ain't no big job. Although an OEM manual would do ya' a lot better than a Clymers.

After you get the prop off, the anode removed, remover the two screws holding the Bearing Housing retainer plates in. Remove the retainers and pull out the bearing housing. If you have a seal puller, this would be a good thing to pull the old seals out with. Just note how the seals come out so you can get the new ones in right. They go in back to back.

If you don't have a seal installer, just get a socket that fits the seal diameter to install them with. Sometimes a metric socket will work better than SAE.

Good Luck and don't hesitate to post any questions you may have.

Hi OBJ
Thanks for the information. I'll look forward to tackling the job. By the way, is there an online parts warehouse that you would recommend to supply me with the anode and seals.

Hey worm.....

If it was me, I'd just go to the local Johnny/Rude dealer and get the parts. You will also need an o'ring for the bearing carrier. Take your model number with ya' so they can get you the right parts. Just for the few parts ya' need it would be less hassle.

Good luck and keep us posted.....thanks.
