Rack steering vs. others

I have an older 24' pontoon boat with an 85HP Evinrude on it. The steering is very tight in one direction. I removed the cable from the engine and the engine moves easily in both directions. When turning the steering wheel even with the cable disconnected from the motor the same tough turning situation occurs. So I am assuming the cable is shot.

The real questions is, now that I am rebuilding this "barge" I am replacing the helm stand as well and only have enough room in one of my helm options for somethinf smaller than the rack set up I currently have.

1. Could I use a rotary system and hook correctly to the 85HP evinrude?
2. Does one steering system work better than the other?
3. Are there significant differnces in price between them?

Sorry about the details but I am new new at this.

Hi Bcomer..

?#1 Yes.... no issues..
?#2 The "No Feedback" rotary systems seem to be the best choice...
?#3 The "no Feedback" rotary systems are a bit more expensive, usually $25 to $75 more..

I used a Teleflex "the rack" on my runabout with an older 85hp Johnson. It works much better than the old worn 30 yr old rack system it replaced. I will be using the nfb rack on my sterndrive this spring.
