just looking for some opinions on this. It looks like I will have the chance to get a Furuno radar system model 1720 (complete) and in excellent working condition and they only want a $100. for it. if nothing is wrong with it and still has plenty of life left would it be a worth while investment?

Re: Radar unit

at the moment, it looks like I'm getting stiffed, someone offered him $200 and it looks like he is going that way, just sucks because he already agreed to sell it to me, and yes he set the price not me.:grumpy:, and no I really don't need it but for a $100 bucks hell yeah I want it.

If you would quit talking about it and get over there you may still get it. :)

Someone "Offered" him $200. Not "Payed" him $200.
Get over there with $100 in cash in hand and say, "$100 NOW guaranteed, or $200 Tomorrow, Maybe! Your Choice!"

If it was on Craigslist that seems to be the way it works....Who ever gets there first and with the most $$$$. I had several verbal transactions with those that listed on Craigslist, told them when I was going to get the item, and they were gone by the time I got there....

Re: Radar unit

Ooooo. Craiglist (off topic). When I purchased my boat it was a 3 hour drive. The owner and I had agreed upon the price, subject to inspection and test drive. Before I left, I told him I would have a cashiers check and my pistol. If I liked the boat, he got the check, if he'd sold it before I got there........ He laughed and the deal went fine. :)

already working on it, already left e-mail and message, waiting for him to get out of class. and yes it is a craigslist deal. When I have sold stuff before I always tell them first money takes it, We even had a time to do the deal on this one and he is still backing out :grumpy:

Re: Radar unit

Assuming you buy it? Where are you going to mount it? Radar beams are dangerous. The dome should be mounted at least 5' above passengers heads. For a 6' tall passenger, that's 11' above the floor. Not very practical in a bow rider

Only to the retinas. Smaller boats usually have radars with lower output but the issue with radiation is not just the size of the output but the length of time one is exposed to it. Radar systems send electromagnetic waves in pulses and not continuously. This makes the average power emitted much lower than the peak pulse power.
Areas where dangerous human exposure may occur are normally inaccessible to unauthorized personnel.

Standing in front or within 4 meters of any devise that transmits a "Electromagnetic radiation field or radio frequency (RF) field" can be dangerous. Now here is the real catch. It does not just depends on the output power and type of wavelengths and frequencies and whether or not its continuous or pulse. But the key factor here is know as the "Time Weighted Average or TWA" of exposure. Meaning how much time does the person in question risk exposure based on a time weighted average of 8 hours at what power output? Most boaters do not stand in front of any type of Electromagnetic radiation field or radio frequency (RF) field designed for pleasure crafts for any length of time that would approach becoming dangerous. I would hope anyway

Does the screen come with it? The mounts? The wiring (cables)? If not you will not be able to by any. It is no longer supported by Furuno.

hmmm, things to consider, but i was thinking of modifying my bimini bracket and add on a bracket system for the radar, the cover is approx 7' tall so according to your info the dome would have to be about 4' higher at the min?

^^^^^^ Not my post
The cover is high enough. Go online and look at some used center consoles with radar for sale. You will see they are not very high and there mounted on the T-Top. About 2 feet above where they stand

Re: Radar unit

yep, sorry for getting the quotes mixed up, and I have noticed that alot of boats domes are not that far above the decks either.

The minimum safe distance varies by the technologies in use. The newer "pulse/broadband" type radar used by Garmin, Lowrance, etc. emit much less energy than their older cousins your considering.

The "worst case" minimum distance for the unit is question is 1.5 meters, or 5'

I'm not saying don't do it. Just want you to make an informed, safe decision.

Yeah do NOT get me started on this BS. I get not wanting to get strung along but to speak to the seller, to agree on a price/day, to DRIVE there and have them say "sorry someone was here this morning with the money and I had no guarantee would be here" makes one want to go on a rampage....
