Re: radio for emergencys

a CB on water is ok i guess but who's your listener..

VHF marine ,,there's 2 kinds .. a handheld good for about 5 / 6 miles..

hard mount with antenna ,, 20 /30 miles..
the CG monitors channel 16 ( i think )..
when anyone turns on a VHF ,, it fires up on channel 16..it's a law for everyone when not talkin' on others channels to have it on channel 16..

16 is a hailing channel.. where everyone that has a radio on ,,is on 16..
once contact is made to who ever your hailin' ,,, you's must switch to a talkin' channel..

so if'n your in trouble ,, pick up the radio & 'holler'.. your & everone else is on the same channel... 16...

isn't it great when everone's on the same channel...

cell phone's are ok .. but more the 5 miles off shore , no towers ,, no talky..

plus ,, when you cell call the CG , you'll get a resciptionist.. 'HOLD PLEASE'..

then you tell her,, she puts you thru to another 'HOLD PLEASE' .. then you say come help me .. they say where are you.. you say ,, i'm on the water ,,they say where..you say,,i don't know,, but i see some seagulls floatin' over yonder.. FAGETTABOUTIT..!!

VHF ,, they can 'hom' in on ya..

TEXGNS,
If you have the room on board why not mount both VHF and CB? Both types of radios are valuble to have on board.A cellular phone is also an excellent idea. But,as we all know cell phone clarity/strength is not always great. You can contact Coast Guard, local police, other boaters with VHF.With CB you can get State police, truckers, etc.Mount the VHF antenna as high as possible for greater range. An 8' 6db antenna will give greater communication range than a 3db antenna, although a 3db antenna may be better suited to a 15'boat.Study antenna differences before making a purchase.Another very important item would be a portable GPS unit. With this you can tell them your position over the radio and they can find you alot faster.... ;)

PS.You may also want to consider a hand-held VHF in case the boat battery goes dead.
